Self Introductions
Program: Tracey Cline, Durham District Attorney presented information on how to follow a case thru the Durham County Judicial System. It is very confusing.
District Court is held on the 4th floor. This includes Misdemeanor, First appearance, and Domestic violence.
Superior Court is held on the 5th floor.
Juvenile Court is for children and this is held in the Clerks Office on the 3rd floor.
After an indictment, it is then sent to Case Management and it can take 4-to 6 weeks for the case to be heard.
The District Attorney will make printed material available for distribution to the PAC 2 Membership. There are so many details and exceptions that it is impossible to go over all these at this meeting.
She did say that Neighborhood Watch is the best thing for any Community and it would be beneficial for as many as possible to follow the cases through Court. Citizens are the only ones who can leverage for change in the Court System. The more we can learn, the better chance we have of getting things changed and improved in the Court system.
Community concerns:
Kudos to the COP (Citizens On Patrol) for the excellent work they do. Great Program.
Kudos also from Duke Park regarding complaints of a barking dog and Officer Rodriquez’s handling of them.
Wednesday, December 16, there is a Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) in the 1000 block of East Geer Street where a crime was committed. Volunteers were solicited.
Departmental Updates:
Parks & Recs: Audrey Gill reported on the closing of Edison Johnson for five months beginning 12-20-2009. Renovations will be made and hopefully reopened on June 1, 2010. Upcoming programs are Kwanza, Life Guard Training and a trip coming up to Hanging Rock Gardens. She reported 850 people attended the Senior Christmas Party.
Reminder: Do not leave items in your vehicles. Any electronic devices or packages that are clearly visible is a temptation for someone to break your windows and steal these items. Remember to remove both the GPS AND the holder. Leaving the holder on the dashboard makes the criminal wonder if it’s been stored under the seat. Remove them both to remove temptation.
Discussion: Listserv: There was a lot of discussion on the use of the Listserv and the main purpose. The original intent of the Listserv was for use of the Police Department to correspond with PAC2 membership. It is a great tool for providing information and we will ask Newman Aguiar to provide information and clarification for the proper use of the ListServ.
