COMMUNITY CONCERNS:
Crime Stoppers: Questions regarding an article in the Newspaper. This was for Orange County rather than Durham County.
Neighbors moved out of the neighborhood and left their cat behind. This cat took up residence next door under the house and did a lot of damage to the furnace vents. They called Animal Control and were told they could not come out because it was too cold. Was this an appropriate response? Cindy Bailey with Animal Control states no, this was not an appropriate response and she would check on this. The neighbor had her vents repaired at a cost of $750.00.
There was a report of a house break-in on the Listserv. Police came in with guns drawn and made an arrest. Was this the house onCharlotte Street? Captain Smith did not know but he will check and let them know.
DEPARTMENTAL UPDATES:
Durham Parks & Rec. Lucille Patterson & Audrey Gill reports that all programs are on-going at other locations even though Edison Johnson is closed for renovations. All events that would have been at Edison Johnson are being held at Campus Hills. SummerCamp Lottery forms will be available January 25, 2010, in printed form or on the Website. MLK Day celebration will be January 16, from 2:00 to 5:00 p m. Senior Games will be held April 7 through May 1, 2010.
Result of survey’s taken for the new Walltown facility will be reported at the February PAC2 Meeting.
SOLID WASTE: Citizens continue to have questions concerning yard waste pick-up. There are several places with bags full of leaves awaiting pick-up. Unless you subscribe to and pay for Yard waste pick-up, these will not be picked up. If these are a problem in your neighborhood, please have them call Solid Waste and the process will be explained. Everyone is entitled for a one time free bulk item pick-up. Mitch does not know if there will be a “blanket†Spring clean-up or not but he will ask. A broken cart was reported over a month ago and still has not been replaced. Mitch Archer will check on this. The question was raised about GPS units on all City trucks. No they are not on all trucks, but hope to have them in the future. Still a problem with some trucks speeding. A report of a “pile†of Corona bottles on the corner of Markham and Roxboro Road was addressed. Call 560-1200 and Mike Simpson will investigate. In some neighborhoods Residents are putting their Recycle carts out every week and pick-up is every other week. Please help educate your neighbors or have them call and confirm their pick-up schedules.
Mr. Archer agreed to stay after the meeting and address any further Solid Waste Issues.
Animal Control: Cindy Bailey reminds us that the “Chaining Dog Ordinance is now in effect. We are in the 6 months warning period now. Dogs cannot be chained outside. If your dogs are outside for any reason, the owner is required to be with them. Pamphlets are now available and they will be posted on the bulletin board at the Dog Park.
Listserv Etiquette: Newman Aguiar presented valuable information on how to use the Listserv correctly. The Listserv was designed originally to communicate with the Police Department. A good “rule of thumb†is that if the information is appropriate to present at a PAC2 meeting, it is appropriate for the Listserv. The ListServ was never designed for just Crime & Safety, but for all Community Concerns. However, Partisan Political messages are always inappropriate as well as solicitations, messages about your business and messages about viruses. If you see an inappropriate message, just delete it rather than trying to respond and create back and forth dialogue. If a response is necessary, reply to the individual privately rather than to everyone. The list is not censored, so an inappropriate message can get through so please be sensitive. Remember we all make mistakes so be kind. Attachments cannot be sent to everyone. If you have information to attach and you want everyone on the Listserv to get it, post these documents to a Website and link the address in your message.
PROGRAM:
Major Paul Martin presented his theory on “The Nature of the Criminal Culture in Durham and what Law Enforcement can do to suppress it.â€
Major Martin has worked in law enforcement since the 1970’s. Everything he has learned has been the result of talking to thousands of arrestees. These are his personal opinions and he strongly advocates prevention of crimes rather than responding to crimes. Whether you agree or disagree with Major Martin, his theory is worth reading. Printed copies were distributed.
Terry Sutton with the Governor’s Crime Commission strongly urged him to apply for a Grant through the Commission and proceed with making an official effort to implement the Program.
