Self Introductions
Departmental Updates:
Cynthia Mebane-Watts, Community Relations Coordinator:
She investigated the neighborhood debris problem. Please call her if you have a debris problem and she will contact the appropriate department for removal.
Included with our Agenda, was a copy of a letter with contact information for the NC Legislative Delegation, House and Senate. Our concerns to be addressed are:
Elimination of emergency judges and the freeze on existing vacancies.
Office supplies cutbacks
Elimination of NCAWARE rollout and other technological updates.
She has made it easy for us to call or e-mail our officials. We need funding for the system that allows our Judicial System to operate more efficiently. The technology that allows the Sheriff’s Department to communicate with the Police Department is crucial.
Please contact our elected officials and voice your support.
Audrey Gill: Durham Parks and Recs:
She introduced Marsha, who is acting as Aquatics Director for all the pools. Pools will be opening on June 13, with the exception of Forest Hills and it is closed for summer for repairs. Summer Camp is full but there are still openings for life guard positions. The Cultural Arts Festival, Bimbe will be held May 16, 12:00 to 9:00 downtown Durham with lots of entertainment food available.
Police Department:
Lt. Lyle Oneal introduced a new detective, Sgt. Mike Berendsen. He works in the area of break-ins and if you have any questions concerning the status of a particular case, please contact him.
Community Concerns:
House at 1010 Washington Street was condemned a year ago. There is suspicious activity going on there and no one should be there at all. Why is it still active? Someone with Neighborhood Improvements will check.
Resident at 1508 Englewood Avenue moved out and left a lot of garbage and furniture stacked outside. Daryl Hedgespeth will check on this. The owner of the property is responsible and the City will remove this and bill the owner for the cost.
SOLID WASTE: There is a schedule for pick up of bulk items once a month. It is very confusing so if you have questions, please call Impact Team Office at 560-4974.
House at 2906 Nellowood has been abandoned and the lot is seriously overgrown. City will check on this.
Question of whom to call for having a covered shelter installed at a Bus Stop. This is Durham One call 560-1200.
Reminder about door-to door Alarm Salesmen. They are in the area. If they come to your house try to get as much information as you can, description, clothing, license #, ask for Peddler’s permit and do not let them into your house. Call Larry Ligon at 919 875-3611 or 850-2798 to confirm if they are registered with the State of NC.
What to do about sneakers hanging on wires in Neighborhood. Call 560-1200.
A special thank you for the COP’s who were present at the recent ceremony honoring those who died in service.
PROGRAM:
Identity Theft: Ms. Caroline Farmer with the N. C. Department of Justice presented an excellent program on how to prevent becoming a victim.
The two paths mostly used is with existing credit and new credit and you must put a freeze on your credit report to prevent this. A handout of dos and don’ts was presented. Strongly recommended you getting a Free Credit Report annually through www.annualcredit report.com or call 1-877-322-8228. Beware of scams and Frauds, as they are numerous and varied.
Cheryl gave a personal testimony of how they were impacted and because they balanced bank statements diligently, were able to stop a potential disaster.
Very important that you destroy all personal and financial information by shredding or other means. Do not put into trash. Participate in the Shred-A-Thon in your area. Email alerts@ncdoj.gov to find out when the truck will be in our County.
Closing remarks: Please think about your major concerns about crime. What is it that bothers you the most? We will have a session to prioritize these concerns and work on solutions.
