Partners Against Crime – District 2 – September 2017 Meeting Notes
The September 2017 PAC 2 meeting was held Monday September 11th from 6-8pm in the cafeteria at the DPS Training Facility, 2107 Hillandale Rd (corner of Hillandale & Carver). This PAC 2 meeting was a Mayoral and City Council Candidates Forum in preparation for the upcoming elections. Facilitators were Ginger Blubaugh and Zion Tankard.
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm. Zion welcomed everybody and gave an overview and short history of PAC 2. Ginger then explained the structure of the meeting to follow which was divided into two parts; the first hour dedicated to mayoral candidates with second hour for city council candidates. The Moderator was Pam Karriker; the Timer was Mike Schiflett.
Mayoral candidates in attendance: Farad Ali, Pierce Freelon, Steve Schewel, Sylvester Williams, and Shea Ramirez. Each candidate had two (2 minutes) to state a short bio, the reason why he/she was running for office of mayor and his/her specific vision for Durham.
City Council candidates in attendance: (for Ward 1) Cora Cole-McFadden, DeDreana Freeman, John Tarantino and Brian Callaway; (Ward 2) Dolly Reaves, Deanna Hall, LeVon Barnes, John Rooks, Jr. and Mark-Anthony Middleton: (Ward 3) Shelia Ann Huggins and Don Moffitt. Each candidate had two (2 minutes) to state a short bio, the reason why he/she was running for office of mayor and his/her specific vision for Durham.
There was a Q&A time period after the candidates presented themselves. Questions from the audience included affordable housing, more green space, pedestrian and bike paths, mental illness and police procedures, Durham as a sanctuary city, ability to build consensus using specific examples, and support of creative arts in Durham.
